Discover the Haut-Koenigsbourg Castle

Perched at an altitude of 757 meters, Haut-Koenigsbourg Castle immerses you in nine centuries of history.
Overlooking the Rhine plain, it stands out as one of the region's most iconic monuments.
A visit is a must for anyone who loves old buildings, medieval history, or exceptional panoramas.
This is an excellent outing idea if you're traveling as a couple, family, or friends.

A journey through time to the heart of the Middle Ages

Erected in the 12th century, Haut-Koenigsbourg Castle has experienced several lives, amidst conflicts and rivalries between lords, kings, and emperors.
Abandoned after the Thirty Years' War, it was restored from 1900 to 1908 by architect Bodo Ebhardt at the instigation of William II.
Faithfully rebuilt in the medieval style, it now presents a remarkable example of medieval military architecture.
Upon passing through its gates, you'll pass through dungeons, drawbridges, armory rooms, and a walled walkway for an incredible journey into the past.

Visits for the Whole Family

The castle isn't just about its architecture. It also offers temporary exhibitions, guided tours, historical activities, and family events.
The meticulous scenography and faithful reconstructions provide a better understanding of life within a fortified castle, from defensive strategies to the daily life of a seigneur.
Themed tours offer a fun approach to medieval daily life. You'll encounter, for example, Margaret the nurse or Ameline the blacksmith during story-based tours.
The castle has inspired numerous films, including Miyazaki's "Howl's Moving Castle" and Peter Jackson's "The Lord of the Rings."

A breathtaking panorama

From the ramparts, the view of the Vosges forest, the Alsace plain, and, on a clear day, as far as the Alps, is simply spectacular.
The site is also the ideal starting point for exploring the Wine Route or the surrounding Alsatian villages, such as Riquewihr or Ribeauvillé.
